Frontier Airlines Fees Review

Frontier Airlines is a budget carrier that offers two fare types: Economy and (more expensive) Classic Plus. Fees are heavy with the former and almost non-existent with the latter. For example, a carry-on bag can cost up to $60 with an Economy ticket while a Classic Plus ticket includes a carry-on and one free checked bag.

Many Frontier fees are variable. The first checked bag can cost between $20 and $60, depending on when the fee is paid. It’s $20 on FlyFrontier.com up to 24 hours before departure. It jumps to $25 if paid over the phone or when checking in online, $30 at the airport, and $60 at the gate (if bag that makes it through security turns out to be larger than Frontier’s specifications: 24 inches tall, 10 inches deep, and 16 inches wide). Knowing these differences and paying when the fee is cheapest can save travelers hundreds.

Frontier is one of only a few airlines that charge for non-alcoholic beverages such as soda and juice ($1.99 each). However, when it comes to major expenses such as oversize or overweight bags ($75), unaccompanied minors ($100), and change fees ($99), Frontier is much more lenient than the big four legacy carriers, sometimes charging less than half those airlines’ fees.
