Here Comes the Bride, all Dressed in...Costco
Discount wedding dresses are shaping up as the newest way to show off your frugal bona fides. As Fox Business reports, Costco is leveraging its status as a purveyor of high-quality items, often sold in bulk and always at low prices, to move into the wedding market. The big-box retailer mounts traveling trunk shows at select stores to show off, and sell, its line of bridal gowns. For brides not fortunate enough to live near one of these sites, the online Costco store is the shopping destination.
Costco is hardly the only merchant to walk down the aisle with thrifty brides. A recent Cheapism blog post noted stores like David's Bridal are now carrying even designer gowns priced at a level far below the thousands of dollars brides spent on their dream dresses in flusher times. Chains like Anne Taylor and J. Crew have also joined the discount wedding dress party. Not to be left out, small independent bridal boutiques are also promoting wedding gowns that pass for cheap (less than $1,000) even if they bear designer labels.
There are all kinds of reasons to opt for cheap over pricey when it comes to a wedding dress. After all, how often will you wear it? Sure, your wedding is a dream moment, but let's get real. You have that reception to pay for and a honeymoon. Then, you may want to start saving for a condo or home, maybe even for the college education of future children. Do you really want to put all those hard-earned dollars into one frilly white basket?
"Forty rolls of toilet paper, six cornish hens, eight tubes of toothpaste and ... a wedding dress. Though this may not be your typical shopping list, all these items can now be found at Costco stores thanks to the discount retailer's recent addition of bridal boutiques..."
