News station WKYC in Cleveland says prices for some healthy foods like fruit and vegetables are soaring again, making it tough for struggling consumers to eat right. What's a budget- and health-conscious buyer to do? The news station lists five of the cheapest healthy grocery items so you don't have to opt for cost-savings at the expense of nutrition.

They include whole-grain pasta, often between a dollar or two per package; a pound of kale for less than $1; and eggs, just over $1.50 at their cheapest cost. Apples and string cheese also make the list.

Some of the other cheapest healthy grocery items WKYC leaves out include canned beans like chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans), often found for less than $1. Two cups of them supply your entire daily value of fiber. Unflavored oatmeal can also be found for cheap, especially if you buy it in bulk. This item gives the bonus of being very versatile. You can add fruit, like those cheap apples mentioned above, along with a sprinkling of vitamin K-, iron- and fiber-rich ground cinnamon, and brown sugar or raisins to give it healthy flavor.
