Vegan health and wellness expert Kathy Freston knows eating organic fresh fruit and veggies is expensive. She doesn't want that fact to deter people from exploring the vegan lifestyle, in which participants forgo any foods containing animal products. Finding cheap vegan food can be easier if you look for dry or canned goods to incorporate into your cooking, Freston says in a Huffington Post story.

Such low-cost, vegan-friendly items include high-fiber chickpeas, whole-grain quinoa and brown rice. Beans themselves can be found canned for less than $1, and supermarkets often have deals to buy five cans for less than $5. Dry whole grains like barley may be pricier than beans, but they last a long time and can thicken up soups and other meals to give you the bulk you need to stay full.

The bonus is that you can find cheap vegan foods at specialty shops or your regular supermarket. If you pair these cheaper items with fresh fruit and produce found for less at farmers' markets or bulk produce stores like Produce Junction, found throughout some East Coast states, you can become vegan without going broke.
