Airlines are offering discount fares left and right for both domestic and international destinations. The catch? Many only allow you to book with carry-on luggage. Even if you decide to go for broke and select a standard fare permitting booked luggage, you'll find more and more airlines are tacking on extra fees for more than one bag. If you want to ultimately save on luggage fees, you're going to need to learn to pack lighter.

A KansasCity.com story says one way to save on luggage fees is to choose your bag carefully. Try to buy one with extra pockets or compartments so you can pack the heck out of it and reduce the chances you'll need to check another bag. You can also stick small items in packed-away purses and pants and jackets with pockets or reduce the space clothes take up by using compression bags. Also opt for multi-purpose clothes like tunics or sarongs that can double or triple as bathing suit wraps and shawls or head scarves.

A quick search of travel blogs shows that some frequent flyers save on luggage fees by using reusable underwear, teeny toiletries and fewer accessories. How cute do you need to look while riding on a feisty camel in Egypt, anyway?

"Between security hurtles and checked baggage fees, limiting luggage has become less of an extreme travel choice and more of a survival strategy. After living for six months out of one small backpack, I learned a thing or two about traveling light. Here are my top tips for traveling with less luggage."
