Anonymous wines at a discount
Shh! Cheap wine on offer...from secret supplier
The rumor mill is swirling around Bostonite Kevin Mehra, who runs 90+Cellars. Why? He's selling anonymous wines at a discount.
It's all because everyone in the vino industry is trying to make money and save face, according to a recent Boston Globe article. Winemakers crippled by the downturn still want to make some sort of profit, but sometimes the only way to do it is by selling their product for less. The discounts are deep; a 2009 vintage that normally retails for $35 is $18 through 90+Cellars. These anonymous wines at a discount are good, too -- Mehra only takes wines that received a rating of 90-plus or a gold medal.
The wine snobs out there might not be down with buying anonymous wines at a discount. But if you're a casual drinker, or always by the cheap stuff anyway, why not give it a shot? There are other cheap deals out there -- the Washington Post is actually now running a cheap wine recommendation column, as we reported last month. But it isn't always easy to find the stuff suggested online at local liquor stores.
Where do you get your cheap wine? Would you try 90+Cellars despite not knowing where the wine comes from?
"Kevin Mehra is a New World négociant. That means he scours the globe for top-notch wine that other producers can't sell, negotiates a bargain price, slaps his 90+Cellars label on the bottles, and offers them to customers at a steep discount..."
