Paris seems the place of indulgence, from the wine to the cheese to the fashion. Doing a cheap Paris vacation must be impossible, right?

Wrong, according to this story on TheStar. One writer and traveler enjoyed a cheap Paris vacation weekend for just $100, subsisting off cheap baguettes and coffee and cheap or free events. The one thing he sacrificed to drive down his expenses was wine.

The cost of alcohol is what can turn a budget getaway into an expensive excursion. But the costliness of the drink depends on the country. France has some of the most expensive wines, but you can get a beer, like TheStar writer did, for less than 4 Euros. In Australia, beer can cost as much as $9 AUD, but you can get a glass of wine for $5 or $6.

Does alcohol account for much of your costs on domestic or international trips?
