According to the ASPCA, the cost of owning a pet can soar beyond $1,800 a year. Pet food is one of the costs that quickly adds up. Consumer Reports recently helped consumers break down the cheapest pet food in a recent story posted on Wilx.com.

Unsurprisingly, Walmart and Target had some of the cheapest prices for regular pet food, while PetSmart was the better option for specialty food. A previous Consumer Reports story talked about why pricey pet food is no better than the cheaper kind. Any label that says "complete and balanced" is likely to give your pet the nutrition he needs. Also look for foods regulated by the American Association of Feed Control Officials. Wet and dry foods offer roughly the same nutritional value, but dry foods are cheaper.
