Your iPad may have been expensive, so you want the books you download onto it to be cheap. Luckily, you can get free eBooks from a few sources, according to this PC World story.

The story writer recommends Project Gutenberg, which offers older books whose copyrights have expired. The books are also compatible on a Kindle, Sony Reader, or Android, in addition to other portable devices. You can find titles by author, book title, or keyword. Feedbooks gives free eBooks for the iPad in addition to the Kindle, Sony Reader, Nook, and other Android devices. epubBooks supplies free downloads for the iPad, Sony Reader, ibis Online Reader, Adobe Digital Editions. and iPhones and Androids. Nook, Kobo, iRiver, and Bookeen Cybook Opus are other eBook readers that work with epub.

Hongkiat.com also offers a list of 20 websites from which you can download free eBooks compatible with a variety of different eReaders.
