What's the cheapest computer you can buy? You have several options, depending on the type of computer you need. Note that the models listed below aren't necessarily the best or even recommended -- they are, however, decidedly inexpensive.

What's the cheapest desktop?

The cheapest computer we found in the desktop category that is both a current model and sold by a reputable retailer is the Zotac Black ZBOX ZBOX-ID41-U Mini Desktop PC with Intel Atom D525 Processor for $222.54 at Walmart. This is a smaller desktop whose manufacturer touts its "eco-friendliness" because it uses less power. The system is described by one consumer as barebones, but it's efficient and can be customized. The mini ZBOX-ID41-U features a 6-in-1 memory card reader, several USB ports, and 512MB dedicated memory.

What's the cheapest laptop?

There's always a new and better laptop out there, but the cheapest laptop we found is the Compaq Black 15.6" Presario CQ57-229WM Laptop PC. This basic model, priced at $298.98 at Walmart (in store and online since June), comes with an AMD Dual-Core C-50 Processor and Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM system memory, and a 250GB SATA hard drive. Specs say the battery lasts up to 4.5 hours before needing a recharge.

What's the cheapest netbook?

In the netbook category, the cheapest computer available is the ASUS Eee PC X101 - Atom N435 - 10.1" TFT for $209.99. Brand new, this model runs for up to four hours on battery and comes with 1GB RAM and an 8GB hard drive.
