Couples' Halloween Costumes on a Budget

Posted on 10/7/2013 13:12 EST

We've all been there: It's the night before the big Halloween party and you and your sweetie only have the clothes on your back, a roll of duct tape, and a leftover pizza box. Now what? Rather than raiding the nearest pop-up costume store and dropping a small fortune, we found five cheap costumes for couples that won't break the bank -- or your back.

Adam and Eve.

Grab an apple off the kitchen counter and some greenery, real or fake, and you've got yourself a cheap couple's costume of Adam and Eve. Use the greenery to create a headpiece as well as covering for the essentials. The air outside will be cold on Halloween in many locales, so consider wearing warm neutral-colored clothing underneath, such as leggings and a long-sleeved T-shirt or a bodysuit. The dollar store is a dependable source for the fixings, be it decorative leaves or that darned snake.

Housewife and Husband.

Make a cheap adult couple's costume out of your real life, but with vintage flare. Bust out the best apron in the house or snag one at the consignment shop, and choose a few flashback pieces of costume jewelry, such as a pearl necklace or pearl earrings (maybe grandma has some?). Dig up an old pipe and plastic rim glasses for the hubby and suit up in a sweater vest and necktie to round out the ensemble.

If you don't have these items in your own junk drawer, ask around. Your friends may have one of the items you need and perhaps something from your stash of random accessories can round out their couple's Halloween costume.

Stick Figures.

You'll be sure to win some extra points for creativity and frugality with this cheap Halloween costume. There's no doubt that you have a white shirt and white pants hanging in the closet that can be converted into a stick figure. With some electrical or duct tape you can quickly, and cheaply, bring to life your child's latest drawing. Using the tape, "draw" the arms, body, and legs of your stick figure right on the canvas of white clothing. Don't forget to complete the look with a stick figure face using a piece of white poster board or the cardboard from a leftover pizza box, and, of course, the trusty tape. This costume costs next to nothing and is a sure winner.

Wayne and Garth.

So, we may be showing our age here, but Wayne and Garth from the 1990s Saturday Night Live skit is another easy and cheap couple's costumes option. Dig up an old, ratty band t-shirt and ripped jeans and slip on a baseball cap and you're ready to go -- with not a dime leaving your pocket. For even more authenticity, pull out the paint or white-out like these revelers and brand your ensemble. For the finishing touch you'll need a backstage pass. Groupies of a certain age may have one from back in the day; if not, lanyard and a laminated piece of paper will do the trick.

Salt and Pepper Shakers.

Nothing goes together better than salt and pepper. Not only is this cheap Halloween costume a romantic gesture, it's a cheap one, to boot. With black and white clothing, tape or paint, and a winter cap, salt and peppers shakers are born. The toughest part may be deciding who gets to be the salt and who gets to be the pepper. Dress in all white or black respectively, and adorn your shirt with either an "S" or a "P" in the contrasting color using paint or tape. Plop on your winter hat, preferably in gray or silver, and you're set.
