Forget about those layaway plans, despite what the retailers tell you. You'll wind up spending more for the item, reports Time Magazine, due to fees and restrictions. Practice frugality instead: save what you need to buy the item outright, and then spring for it.

"Layaway purchases have returned in a big way. More and more retailers are offering layaway, and it's often being heralded as a way to get more value for your money. Really? I don't get it.
