Numbers show holiday shoppers stuck in thrifty mode

Store traffic is up this holiday season but spending is down. A story in The Arizona Republic reports on what's shaping up to be a ho-hum year for retailers, when shoppers continue to grab for the bargains but shun regular-priced merchandise.

"Lured out of bed on Black Friday by awesome deals on laptop computers and flat panel televisions, Arizona consumers hit the stores early and in droves.

But, according to polls, shoppers didn't stray too far beyond the door-buster deals that retailers offered to entice them inside.

The National Retail Federation reported that while more people shopped on the day after Thanksgiving this year, they spent less money..."
