Yet another report, this one from The Detroit News on the many ways consumers are downsizing this holiday season. Just remember, instead of gizmos and bling, think home-made, practical, thoughtful, and local. And forget those high-cost parties; there's nothing like a cozy get-together at home.

"It's beginning to look a lot like a .... frugal Christmas. Many shoppers are bypassing fancy electronic gizmos, fine jewelry and cashmere sweaters and making their own gifts this year, experts say. Revelers are giving more thoughtful gifts, having get-togethers at home and leaving the bling out of festivities. "People are buying (gifts) for fewer people; they're being more selective with gifts. Parties will be downsized; decorations won't be as elaborate, and homemade gifts will be big," said Mike Bernacchi, a marketing expert at the University of Detroit Mercy. "This is the first holiday season with the new consumer..."
