No, you don't have to keep up with the baby Joneses. It's not style that matters, writes The Victoria Times Colonist, but safety. So go cheap when outfitting the nursery, but make sure you buy items like cribs, strollers, and high chairs that meet current safety standards.

"Expecting a baby? You can also expect some major home-decorating costs. Estimates are that outfitting a nursery costs anywhere from $2,000 and $6,000, and that's just the start.

Americans spend about $27 billion annually on products for newborn to preschool-aged tots, according to industry statistics, and Canada, with about 10 per cent of the U.S. population, can be estimated to spend about $2.7 billion..."
