Never mind those hot spots in the cold months. Go for less glitz in the off season. That's the rationale behind this list from The New York Times, which suggests relatively cheap foreign and domestic vacation destinations.

"WHY NOW The sugary beaches of Barbados have long been a Caribbean playground for Britain's elite. But while the gated plantation homes and polo grounds are still there, hoteliers are angling to attract a hipper and younger crowd. In the spring, when the high season tapers off, you're just as likely to see fashionistas from New York City throwing back cocktails at the pompously chic Sandy Lane Hotel as tea-sipping octogenarians. Getting there is also easier. JetBlue has new, daily nonstop flights from Kennedy Airport, which means you can leave in the morning and hit the beach by lunch..."
