The U.S. surgeon general is calling on Americans to take action to ward off skin cancer. A report issued July 29 identifies skin cancer as one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S., despite the fact that most forms of the disease are preventable. The deadliest one, melanoma, is on the rise. Dr. Boris D. Lushniak, the acting surgeon general, went so far as to say, "We need to shatter the myth that tanned skin is a sign of health." The call to action includes a list of protective strategies. Among them: Wear protective clothing, a hat, and sunglasses; seek shade; avoid midday sun; and use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher. Read More
