"An interesting news item over at AppleInsider caught my eye the other day, but I'm not sure how I would feel about this particular rumor if it turned out to be true. Apparently Apple is investigating the use of hover gestures on its devices as an alternative to multitouch. A few of the ideas include the ability to make the OK gesture with your hand or use hitchhiker thumb gestures to navigate around. As a tech writer, I can't wait to see how something like this would be implemented, but as an iPhone user who will be using the device in public, the idea of using my hands in front of the screen sounds silly..."

The race is on: cheap Android tablets vs. iPad. Anyone willing to place bets on which one wins? MSNBC talked to an expert who predicted that ... well, we're not going to spoil the surprise. You'll just have to see for yourself.
"Android has not only triumphed as the No. 1 smart phone platform in the world, but it is very likely to surpass iPad as number one tablet OS, despite the iPad's current 75 percent market share.
The observation comes from Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, who talked to Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Explaining that Android tablets had gained a 22 percent market share in tablet shipments in the fourth quarter of last year -- a quarter where the iPad was on fire and the nearest Android competitor, the Galaxy Tab, was a rather weak offering at best -- Mawston said, "If you were to ask me in two years time, will Apple have less than 50 percent of the global tablet market, I think that's a certainty..."
