12 Gifts Under $30 for Star Wars Fans

THE MARKETING FORCES AWAKEN

With the latest "Star Wars" movie premiering a week before Christmas, themed toys and other items tied to the franchise will be hot holiday gifts this year. One toy, a BB-8 app-controlled Droid by Sphero, sold out within hours at many stores. It's back in stock, but the $150 price tag might scare more people than a wild rancor. Shoppers with modest budgets can choose among these 12 Star Wars gifts under $30 for the fans on their lists.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS

Jeffrey Brown puts a twist on children's books and "Star Wars" with editions based on the premise that Darth Vader was a good father who was always there for his kids. There are many titles to choose from, including "Vader's Little Princess," "Darth Vader and Son," "Goodnight Darth Vader," and "Darth Vader and Friends." The books (about $9 each) delight adult fans as much as children.

DEATH STAR ICE CUBE TRAYS

An excellent gift for aspiring mixologists, a Death Star silicone mold ($4 on Amazon) creates a giant ball of ice to put in a cocktail. There is also a silicone tray ($6) that makes seven blocks of ice shaped like Han Solo frozen in carbonite. Or, go all out and get a set of six molds: Han, Darth Vader, R2-D2, the Millennium Falcon, an X-wing, and a stormtrooper ($20). The molds can also be used to make chocolates, candles, or fondant shapes.

HAN AND LEIA HAND TOWELS

This take on his-and-hers towels ($20) is a good gift for a couple. Created by and for ecommerce site ThinkGeek, the hand towels are embroidered with Leia and Han's famous words to each other in "The Empire Strikes Back": "I love you." "I know."

HEAT-CHANGE MUGS

Another ThinkGeek exclusive, three Star Wars mugs ($12 each) change appearances when hot liquid is poured inside. On one, the temperature change reveals Yoda's green lightsaber and the line "Do, or do not. There is no try." On another, explosions and lasers appear in a battle between the Millennium Falcon and other ships.

CHOPSTICKS

On Amazon, shoppers can choose among several lightsaber chopsticks ($10 to $15 a set) -- a good stocking stuffer. Go with a classic red, green, or blue, or Mace Windu's iconic purple. The chopsticks can light up, and some have removable "blades" for washing.

Two childhood favorites combine in these action figures from Lego ($20 to $25). Fans can build the movies' main characters, with posable limbs and weapons. There are also numerous sets of characters and vehicles from the movies to go with the figures.

YODA APPAREL FOR NEWBORNS

Sellers on Etsy are meeting demand for Star Wars merchandise with homemade knit and crocheted hats or costumes that turn babies into Yoda. Jedi outfits and hats are also popular. Prices vary, but hats start around $10 and outfits around $23.

BOARD GAMES

Make the time-tested enjoyment that comes from a game such as Risk, Monopoly, or Battleship and customize it with a Star Wars edition ($19 to $24 at Walmart or Amazon).

BED AND BATH ITEMS

Retailers are stocking up on a variety of bed and bath products for Star Wars fans. Walmart has a silk throw ($10), a stormtrooper toothbrush holder ($9), and an R2-D2 trash can ($10). Target is selling several different blankets and throws ($15 to $25), a table lamp ($20), and stuffed animals ($20).

COOKBOOKS

Star Wars cookbooks include the best-selling "Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes" ($11 on Amazon) and "Wookie Pies, Clone Scones, and Other Galactic Goodies," which comes with Yoda, Darth Vader, and R2-D2 cookie cutters ($15.50). Outfit the baker with a Star Wars apron ($15 to $20).

COOKIE CUTTER SETS

Williams-Sonoma sells an eight-piece Star Wars cookie cutter set ($30). Instead of giving it as a gift, you may want to keep it and make Yoda, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C3PO, stormtrooper, Death Star, Darth Vader, and Millennium Falcon holiday cookies for others.

CUFF LINKS

Cuff links often cost $50 or more at traditional retail stores, but on Etsy they cost as little as $8 a set. Depending on the seller, they may be made out of laser-etched wood, polymer clay, stainless steel, or silver-plated alloys. Some are made to order and may take a few extra days to ship.
