Summary:

The Pabst Blue Ribbon review by our panel of 13 commended its "mild," "drinkable" flavor and "good balance." The group awarded this American lager top billing over eight other entrants, calling it "a little hoppy" but taking exception to the somewhat "flat aftertaste." One panelist called announced it was the "first drinkable" beer she had tasted that evening.

Pabst Blue Ribbon is sold by Pabst Brewing Company, originally established in Milwaukee but now headquartered in Los Angeles and outsourcing the brewing to Miller Brewing Company. We picked up a six-pack of 16-ounce cans for $4.79 at our local market, which works out to around 80 cents a can, or 5 cents an ounce.

Beer enthusiasts who posted Pabst Blue Ribbon reviews at Beer Advocate gave it an "average" rating, although the two website owners assigned it a slightly higher rating of "good." The review by these connoisseurs cited its crispness and bubbly carbonation; one called it a "great" premium lager that easily beat out the big-time competition. This review also noted that tap pours are slightly more satisfying than pours from a can.

A mainstream lager that won't bust your budget, Pabst Blue Ribbon (5 cents/ounce) was an unexpected first place finisher in our blind tasting of nine lagers. If it hasn't yet graced your table, it seems to be a brew that's worth a try.
