Asus VS229H-P Review
The Asus VS229H-P (starting at $153, Amazon) is a little smaller and a little cheaper than another Asus monitor we researched, but there's one other critical difference: this is an IPS monitor, and a very cheap one at that. It garnered an Editor's Choice award from PC Mag, whose Asus VS229H-P review grants it four out of five stars and declares it an excellent value. In particular, the Asus VS229H-P review raves about the extraordinary color quality and deep blacks, attributing much of this feat to the underlying IPS technology, and notes other performance highlights such as solid off-angle viewing (another boon of IPS), strong grayscale test results, and sharp shadow detail. The expert reviewer noticed a hint of ghosting during gaming sessions but says you really have to look for it; Blu-ray display, meanwhile, is excellent.
Users who posted Asus VS229H-P reviews at Newegg are, for the most part, equally impressed with the rich color and wide-angle viewing; one asserts that the deep colors and bright whites are rich and intense but not blinding. Reviews at Amazon often reference the smooth on-screen action and say the monitor is a cinch to set up. Still, reviews air a few complaints: a faint haze makes the screen look dusty, out-of-the-box settings are slightly off, and the stand wobbles.
The Asus VS229H-P is a widescreen 21.5-inch LED IPS display with a resolution of 1920x1080. Its brightness is a typical 250cd/m and the horizontal and vertical viewing angles a generous 178 degrees. The 5ms response time is common to many budget IPS displays and sufficient for all but the most dedicated gamers. Inputs on the Asus VS229H-P include HDMI, D-Sub, and DVI-D connections. The monitor tilts forward and back and the base comes off for wall mounting. The Asus VS229H-P is Energy Star certified.
A modest price and modest size make the Asus VS229H-P an entry-level monitor, but it ranks higher on the performance scale. Clarity, color, and grayscale are outstanding and games and movies don't suffer from a slightly slow response time and slightly small screen. It's hard to pass on an ISP monitor at this price, and this model won't disappoint.
