If you're in the market for a budget mountain bike, doing your homework before you buy is key to getting the best bike for your needs. First, look at a bike's frame composition and suspension. Aluminum is lighter than steel but delivers a slightly bumpier ride. Most reviewers seem to prefer aluminum, however, because weight is a big issue. Mountain bike enthusiasts prefer lighter bikes that can be more easily pushed or carried. Front suspension is widely available, although full, or dual, suspension is making inroads into the budget mountain bike segment. Other common features include 26-inch tires and 21 speeds. Most budget mountain bikes come with V-brakes (linear pull), but disc brakes are an improvement and beginning to show up on lower-priced models.
