Epson WF-2540 Review

best

The Epson WF-2540 has a long list of attributes, including an automatic document feeder and built-in fax. Text documents print especially fast.

The Epson WF-2540 (starting at $75, Amazon) seems like it can do it all at an affordable price, thanks to its many features. An Epson WF-2540 review at CNET awards this all-in-one model four out of five stars. The expert reviewer is impressed by the ability to make copies without using a PC, the printer's apps and cloud-printing options, and the 30-sheet automatic document feeder. The printer has three color ink tanks and one black ink tank, and the CNET expert says replacement ink is affordable. The site's tests showed that the machine prints more quickly than advertised: CNET clocked it at 12.7 pages per minute printing black text. The manufacturer claims a print speed of about 9 ppm in black and white and 4.7 ppm in color. The quality of the text was on par with a laser printer, which is hard for an inkjet printer to pull off.

PC World likewise gives the printer credit for high-quality text and graphics. However, the Epson WF-2540 was pretty slow at printing photos in testing. That was using the "best" quality print setting, though; lowering that setting one notch speeds up the print time substantially without compromising photo quality very much.

The Epson WF-2540 can print, copy, scan, and fax. The maximum print resolution is 5,760 x 1,440 dots per inch. The fax can transmit both black-and-white and color missives. The printer has a 100-sheet capacity and supports a nice variety of paper sizes. It connects to other devices via a USB port, Ethernet connection, or wireless and is compatible with the Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print remote printing services. Epson also has a mobile app that owners can use to print remotely from a smartphone or other device. The Epson WF-2540 has a 2.5-inch LCD and weighs 12.8 pounds, which is pretty light for an all-in-one.

The Epson WF-2540 has just about everything a user could want in an all-in-one inkjet printer. It can scan, copy, and even fax as well as print. It includes an automatic document feeder, which is a feature many consumers like but is often not available on a budget all-in-one. The print quality is very good, especially for text. The only real knock on the Epson WF-2540 is that it prints photos slowly, but the results are worth the wait.
