When you need to mow more than half an acre of lawn but less than five, any one of the best cheap lawn tractors can handle the job. Look for a cutting width of 42-46 inches (the one model featured above with a 26-inch deck is technically a riding mower and works best on a flat one acre or less); the wider the deck, the fewer passes you'll make but the more storage space you'll need. All the cheap lawn tractors on our list sport a single-cylinder engine and multiple cutting heights that top out at four inches. The turning radius is a good 16 or 18 inches on the cheap lawn tractors with rear-mounted engines that we like; the lighter and smaller Weedeater One, a riding mower with a rear-mounted engine, has a 31-inch turning radius. Another feature to consider is the transmission: gear-driven models require manual shifting between speeds and hydrostatic drives let you accelerate smoothly up to the maximum speed with either a lever or foot pedal.
