TurboTax Review

(free for 1040EZ and simple returns, plus $27.95 for state return). TurboTax is the leader in the tax prep software industry, and for good reason. Its products score high in nearly every category, and it's unusual to find an expert reviewer who doesn't place this product first in terms of quality.

Unfortunately, TurboTax has two knocks against it. First, it's one of the most expensive products available. In 2009, a CNET review of top online tax prep providers cautioned users not to waste the extra money on TurboTax for simple returns and stressed that cheaper programs, like Tax Slayer or TaxACT, would suffice. The TurboTax review on CNET also noted that because this is such a powerful program, it runs much slower than other comparable software, so takes longer to complete your return. Not a great feature if you're looking for a quick and convenient tax prep experience.

Another disappointment voiced by countless TurboTax users concerns hidden fees. You name a surprise fee, and there's probably a customer who says they were charged unexpectedly for it. TurboTax reviews on ConsumerAffairs reveal dozens of complaints from TurboTax users about charges for upgrades they didn't need or authorize.

TurboTax customers are also vocal about the lack of support available. You might expect some of the smaller, less expensive providers to get bogged down by calls and have long wait times, but it's disappointing to learn that even customers who purchase the more expensive boxed versions of this tax prep software still can't get a live person on the phone to answer their questions. For the price, you'd think TurboTax might spend a bit more on customer service.
