Safeway Select Half Pepperoni & Half Cheese Review

This Safeway store-brand pizza ($4.99 for 28.7 ounces, or 17 cents an ounce) rang in at a moderate price of $4.99 per pie. With the weight a generous 28.7 ounces, the per-ounce cost is low, at 17 cents. Our crew of testers gave the cheese half of this Safeway Select pizza an average score of 2 out of 5 and awarded a higher rating of 2.8 out of 5 to the pepperoni side.

On first impression, our tasters called this pie "thick" and "juicy" and said it "looks fresh." They also mentioned the "thick pepperoni" but noted that the distribution wasn't uniform. When it came to taste, this Safeway Select pizza was less successful. Panelists called out the "weird, bland bread" and "wine-flavored sauce." Others said the "crust overpowers the toppings" and the pizza needs more sauce. Texture-wise, the panel considered the Safeway Select pizza "overly doughy" and "too thick."

Safeway Select pizza reviews online are largely limited to a smattering of blog mentions. The Pizza Project has high praise for a similar pie, the Five Cheese Pepperoni. The reviewer claims he's never found a better frozen pizza, lauding the texture and bite of the crust, the consistency of the sauce, and the flavor of the cheese. Its one weakness, he says, is the decidedly un-spicy pepperoni.
