Lawn Mower Deals

Finding a lawn mower deal often comes down to timing. Spring and early summer offer plenty of options to choose among, but not at discounted prices.

The best time of year to shop for a low-cost lawn mower is September or October. Why? The outdoor season is almost over and retailers are eager to rid themselves of old models to make room on shelves and sales floors for seasonal merchandise.

There are numerous places to search for a lawn mower if you want to avoid paying full price. Good starting points include home improvement stores and e-commerce sites with specific sections dedicated to garden and lawn care -- a sure sign you'll find a bigger selection. The Sears Outlet offers new and reconditioned lawn mowers starting at less than $70. At Sears.com, be sure to click the "Special Offers" tab on any product page for additional lawn mower deals. Offers have included free shipping, an extra 5 percent off, and a free bucket with certain Lawn & Garden purchases. Lowe's has featured push lawn mowers starting at around $150, while Home Depot has listed lawn mower deals for electric models starting at $125 and gas models starting at $150. Home Depot also provides free delivery on orders over $45 and Lowe's offers free store pickup for many online orders.

Superstores like Walmart and Target also offer a handful of lawn mower deals. Between the two, Walmart seems to offer better deals for reel and electric mowers. Walmart's website has listed reel mowers starting at about $70 compared with about $90 at Target, and electric mowers starting at around $140, compared with about $180 at Target. For gas lawn mower deals, Target may be the best bet: Prices have started at about $190 compared with about $215 at Walmart. Several Target lawn mowers are eligible for free shipping, while Walmart's lawn mowers are eligible for free site-to-store shipping. True Value also has numerous lawn mower deals below $300 and, like Walmart, offers free shipping to a retail location. True Value hardware stores are located in 48 states.

Online retailers Overstock.com and Amazon both showcase a range of lawn mower deals that fall well below the $300 Cheapism ceiling. Amazon.com features a wider selection, including one of our top choices, the Black & Decker MM275, for just $166. The online giant also provides free Super Saver shipping on select lawn mower models. Both sites make it very easy to see user reviews on models you may be interested in. Sites such as Shopping.com are good price-comparison tools. You can search lawn mower deals by price range, compare choices among stores, and even see shipping costs for the model you're considering.
