Headquartered in Morresville, North Carolina, Lowe's is the second-largest hardware chain in the United States. Lowe's consistently ranks well with consumers when it comes to customer service, product selection, merchandise quality, and in-store experience. According to shopper reviews, Lowe's lags behind the Home Depot competition in the areas of employee expertise and imparting technical know-how. (Our experience differed, however -- we found Lowe's employees to be quite knowledgeable.) Lowe's bread and butter seems to be the average homeowner and the beginning-to-intermediate DIYer. The retailer particularly appeals to women and married couples; one reason may be that Lowe's is perceived as having a wider selection of designer and decorator products. For shoppers tackling basic home improvement projects or looking to make cosmetic updates, Lowe's stands out as the obvious choice.
