Dishwashers Performance (continued)
Quiet Dishwashers.
The biggest thing consumers seem to be looking for in a dishwasher, aside from cleaning ability, is quiet operation. Many people who have replaced old dishwashers are surprised by how quiet dishwashers are now. The Ascenta SHE5AL02UC, the least pricey Bosch model, runs at 53 decibels; for comparison, a normal conversation registers about 60 decibels, according to HowStuffWorks. The highest-end Bosch, on the other hand, registers a mere 40 decibels of dishwasher noise, which makes it about 100 times quieter than a normal speaking voice. The Maytag Jetclean Plus MDB4709AW, the Frigidaire FDB520RHS, and the GE GSD4000RWW register 61 decibels, or almost 10 times the volume of the Bosch Ascenta and about the level of a conversation, so you may have to raise your voice to be heard over the dishwasher noise. Both of the Whirlpool dishwashers register 60 decibels.
All that aside, what seems reasonable to one person is irritatingly noisy to another. A lot depends on when you run the dishwasher. If you use the delay start and run the machine while you're asleep, you might never notice the dishwasher noise, whereas if you're trying to talk to someone nearby, a relatively quiet dishwasher could cause a lot of disruption. It also depends on what you're used to. A consumer posting a dishwasher review at Best Buy compares the Frigidaire FDB520RHS favorably with a previous dishwasher in the noise department, while another consumer compares it to a freight train. One consumer who posted a dishwasher review at AJ Madison also finds the Frigidaire relatively loud but doesn't mind putting up with it for such a good price. A user who posted a review of the stainless steel GE GSD4060RSS at Home Depot says the insulation blanket that comes with the appliance is too thin and suggests reusing the one from your previous model if it was a relatively quiet dishwasher. On the other hand, another consumer who posted a review on the same site says the GE is so quiet her husband keeps checking to see whether it's on.
Dishwasher Warranty and Durability.
When people buy a dishwasher, they expect it to last at least a few years, no matter what the price. The average lifespan of a dishwasher is 10 years, according to Consumer Reports, and the usual dishwasher warranty for a low-priced model is one year. Consumers find that repairs cost almost as much as buying a new dishwasher, and people on several sites recommend buying an extended dishwasher warranty. For the most part, the dishwashers on our list appear to stand the test of time. One consumer says in a review at Sears that she's even happier with the Whirlpool DU1301XTV six months later than she was when she first bought it. Conversely, time has done nothing to improve one user's opinion of the stainless steel GE GSD4060RSS, which fails to get anything but glasses and silverware clean, according to a review at Home Depot. Other users concur in reviews of GE GSD4000 models on Epinions. The reviews include reports of a leaking dishwasher and several parts that had to be replaced under the warranty. A worrisome number of consumers posting reviews at Lowe's report that the Whirlpool DU1055XTVQ had to be repaired or replaced after a relatively short period of time. The price of the Frigidaire FDB520RHS is so low that consumer confidence in its durability also appears low, and occasionally rightly so. One user who posted a dishwasher review at Best Buy reports that the Frigidaire stopped working after eight months and another says it needed expensive repairs after two years. But overall users are pleased with the value this model offers for the money. We found no mention of longevity in reviews of the Bosch Ascenta SHE5AL02UC. Issues with the soap door sticking and a broken rinse agent dispenser didn't keep AJ Madison customers from giving the dishwasher positive reviews.
