Steam Cleaners Performance

Most steam cleaners reviews that we found are posted by consumers who use the appliance to clean carpets and bare floors, and sometimes upholstery, countertops, stoves, and bathroom surfaces. Not surprisingly, the chief performance criteria consumers mention in steam cleaners reviews center on cleaning ability, usability, and durability.

And while many consumers are satisfied with their discount steam cleaners, at least some less favorable steam cleaners reviews popped up for all the models we researched.

Steam Cleaners Cleaning Ability.

Tackling pet stains, juice spills, foot traffic grime, and general all-around dirt are the major tasks assigned to siscount steam cleaners. Based on dozens of steam cleaners reviews that we read, several models rise to the challenge.

Steam cleaners reviews of the Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge on sites like Amazon and Best Buy give this model high marks for power and effectiveness. Users praise its ability to rid carpets and rugs of all types of stains and dirt, bringing them back to their original color (even white and cream) and restoring the knap; many add that it works just as well on hard surfaces like linoleum. A few steam cleaners reviews note that old or ground-in stains may need a double pass or pre-treating with spot-cleaner; releasing an extra spurt of the water/cleaning solution with the "surge" feature is a big help. Assessments of the upholstery attachment in steam cleaners reviews are less enthusiastic. A few users grumble about suction that's too weak to draw the deposited water-solution mix out of the material, although this doesn't seem to be an issue on carpets.

The Hoover SteamVac All-Terrain, near the top of the Cheapism price niche, cleans well enough, according to steam cleaners reviews on Best Buy, but is undercut by the tendency for parts to give out (see comments on durability below). One user reports that the SteamVac All-Terrain eliminates dirt from carpets as well as the smell of household pets, and another often substitutes vinegar for the detergent, a trick she says fights stains and brightens the carpets. Other steam cleaners reviews express satisfaction with its ability to scrub grout and tile floors.

The vapor steam created by the Haan Deluxe Total Home Steam Cleaning System makes cleaning fun, according to one steam cleaners review on Amazon. Consumers appreciate the choice of an upright steamer or handheld attachment for different cleaning chores, from tile floors and carpets to showers, furniture, windows, and mattresses. They also like the chemical-free sanitizing effect of water heated to 212 degrees, which steam cleaners reviews note cuts through grime, scours grout, and cleans messes left by drooling pets; a user posting a steam cleaners review on AllergyConsumerReview says the Haan Deluxe system removed caked-on crud in her kitchen. On the other hand, a couple of critics carp in steam cleaners reviews that the Haan FS-20 and HS-20 steam just fine but don't clean for beans.

One model best suited for hard surfaces is the portable McCulloch MC1246. With a strong 1500-watt engine and steam as the only cleaning agent, the McCulloch MC1246 proves itself against dirty bathroom grout, outdoor grills, baby toys, and just about any hard surface, say steam cleaners reviews on Home Depot, adding that heavy, burnt-on grease may need pre-treating. Users also report good results on upholstered furniture, but one user cautions that the underside of an area rug got very wet and questions whether this is the right steam cleaner for carpets. Another consumer posting a steam cleaners review on Amazon asserts the MC1246 isn't the right steam cleaner for any task and goes on to suggest a variety of alternative cleaning methods that are ostensibly more effective.

Users like the four steam settings and chemical-free cleaning action on the Euroflex Monster EZ1, according to steam cleaners reviews. This steam mop is particularly effective on bathroom and kitchen floors, say steam cleaners reviews on Epinions and Amazon, and the sanitizing effect of 266-degree steam adds to its appeal. Although some consumers say the Euroflex Monster EZ1 removes spills and stains from carpets and plumps the pile, others aren't wild about its carpet-cleaning abilities. Some steam cleaners reviews also grumble that the Euroflex Monster EZ1 leaves too much moisture on both carpets and bare floors.

Steam Cleaners Ease of Use.

For the most part, steam cleaners reviews indicate that the models on our list are relatively easy to use. Lightweight handheld models like the Haan HS-20 are a cinch to carry and easy to fill with water. The comparatively heavy Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge is easy to push around, say steam cleaners reviews, although the slightly lighter Bissell ProHeat 2X takes some hits in steam cleaners reviews on Amazon for being too heavy and unwieldy to haul up and down stairs. Some usability complaints are lodged against the Euroflex Monster EZ1 in steam cleaners reviews on Amazon, where users report the bulky head doesn't fit under cabinet edges and furniture; one consumer points out that the four front steam jets get at those hard-to-reach areas. Although steam mops like the Euroflex Monster and Haan FS-20 have special carpet attachments, some users report that the microfiber pads don't glide easily on carpets or rugs.

The size of the water tank is an issue for some users, according to steam cleaners reviews. The handheld Haan HS-20, for example, holds just seven ounces of water and one user posting a steam cleaners review on Amazon gripes about having had to refill the tank nine times to clean a shower properly. The Euroflex Monster EZ1 supposedly steams away for up to 30 minutes, but a steam cleaners review on Overstock.com claims you get only 10 minutes even on a mid-level steam setting. On the other hand, a steam cleaners review of the Bissell ProHeat 2X steam vacuum likes the one gallon reservoir because it keeps the machine from getting too heavy; moreover, the writer adds, you get to take a break every time the tank runs dry.

Steam Cleaners Durability.

Although frequency of use varies by household, be it weekly, monthly, semi-annually, or spur-of-the-moment, you want a steam cleaner you can count on. Durability is relatively high for the cheap steam cleaners on our list, but we did find reports of problems here and there. Note that all come with one-year limited warranties.

Few complaints surfaced about the Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge, although several steam cleaners reviews say the plastic part holding the machine upright breaks easily and a user review on About.com says two critical seals failed after just three uses over a period of 18 months. The Haan Deluxe FS-20/HS-20 package gets an all-clear in many steam cleaners reviews, but one consumer notes that the height-adjustable handle came apart and couldn't be reassembled. Dissatisfaction with customer service shows up in a few steam cleaners reviews of the Euroflex Monster EZ1 on Overstock.com, where some users write that the machine gave out after a year. Several gripes about reliability also appear in steam cleaners reviews on Amazon of the McCulloch MC1246. Significantly louder complaints about durability concern the Hoover SteamVac All-Terrain carpet cleaner. Users posting steam cleaners reviews on Best Buy and Epinions report more than the usual share of broken brushes, malfunctioning motors, and leaking water tanks and soap dispensers after just a few outings. And the cost of repairs, they add, can quickly add up to surpass the cost of the machine.

Don't Bother Cheap Steam Cleaners

Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner, All-Terrain, F7452900

The most expensive model on our list, the Hoover SteamVac All-Terrain will cost you plenty more given the propensity for parts like brushes, water tank, and motor to break. While overall cleaning ability is praised, durability problems lead many users to peg this a poor investment.
