The Gap return policy gives you 45 days from the date of purchase to decide whether to keep the item or offload it and includes no reprieve for holiday purchases. Gap is one of the few retailers to offer free return shipping for online orders, with a pre-paid UPS label.

The retailers under the Gap umbrella are popular gift-buying destinations if you're shopping for clothing. But as often happens with apparel, the wrong size or color dooms an item to the returns bin. The Gap return policy gives you 45 days from the date of purchase to decide whether to keep the item or offload it, and includes no reprieve for holiday purchases. Gap's return policy is one of the few to offer free return shipping with a pre-paid UPS label that comes with items purchased online (in case there is no return label, you can get one at the Gap website). The company will not, however, refund original shipping charges.

Although Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Athleta are owned by the same corporate parent and you can group items from multiple brands into one online order, returns to a physical store must be made to the appropriate outlet. This part of the Gap return policy doesn't apply to mailed returns; items from multiple labels can be shipped back in one box. You can also exchange items by mail if you need a different size, but you must call customer service first. Some items, including all merchandise from Piperlime, an online vendor, can be returned only by mail. Gap absorbs the cost of sending out the replacement item.

Returns are granted in the form of the initial payment, meaning a credit card purchase that's returned will be refunded to that credit card, for example. Only unworn and unwashed items are accepted, so take care when trying on that sweater and don't wear it all week before deciding to return it. If you bring the item to a store for exchange or refund, make sure you have the receipt or invoice. Gift givers who shop at a physical store should request a gift receipt; recipients of gifts ordered online can make a return without an invoice but should call customer service first. The Gap return policy states that gift recipients will receive a gift card for any return.
