GameStop Return Policy Review

Because GameStop's main business is buying and selling video games, the return policy is quite restrictive.

GameStop sells new and used video games and all manner of gaming-related hardware and guides. Select brick-and-mortar stores also carry phones, tablets, and laptops. Because this retailer's main business is buying and selling video games, the GameStop return policy is quite restrictive.

For starters, the retailer is not relaxing its rules for holiday gifts in 2013. Moreover, all returns and exchanges require a receipt and must be made within 30 days of purchase; only unopened items qualify. If you open a package you can still bring it back within that timeframe, but only to exchange it for an identical product. One exception to this part of the GameStop return policy: Opened accessories qualify for a full refund within 30 days. GameStop also sells pre-owned merchandise, which can be returned within seven days or exchanged for the same item within 30 days.

If you hold on to any purchase for longer than 30 days but find you no longer need or want it, you can take advantage of GameStop's trade-in policy. The value of the trade-in depends on the specific product and its condition. Although you can generally trade in items for cash or store credit, you will walk away with the dollar equivalent of 20 percent more by opting for store credit rather than cash.

The customer service line is supposedly open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. central time, but when we tried calling several times on a Monday afternoon, we were treated to a busy signal. When we finally got through the next day, we were put on hold and gave up after 10 minutes.
