Doughnuts are newly trendy -- and not just the traditional varieties. The cronut had its moment, and in some cities maple bacon doughnuts are practically as common as chocolate glaze. Now artisanal bakeries are coming up with all sorts of new, flavorful, and sometimes strange concoctions. Here are 43 unique and often mouthwatering options from across the country.

THE POT HOLE

Voodoo Doughnut, a Portland-founded shop that has opened stores elsewhere in Oregon as well as Colorado, Texas, and Taiwan, is responsible for some of the most creative doughnuts out there. The Pot Hole, a cream-filled chocolate bar doughnut covered in Oreos with a line of white frosting down the center, is a recent addition to the lineup.

VOODOO DOLL

This Voodoo Doughnut namesake is shaped like a voodoo doll, complete with eyes and a mouth. The yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly and topped with chocolate frosting. As a finishing touch, a pretzel stake is pushed into its heart.

MAPLE BLAZER BLUNT

The Maple Blazer Blunt from Voodoo Doughnut is a maple bar doughnut rolled into a cylinder and dusted with cinnamon and sugar. One end is dipped in maple frosting and covered in red sprinkles to resemble an ember.

THE OG

Although not as well-known as Voodoo, Portland's Blue Star Donuts wins out in the eyes of some locals. There are five locations in Portland, one in L.A., and two in Japan, and the company sports a "quality over quantity" approach. The shop's OG doughnut is a yeast doughnut with a horchata glaze.

The Blueberry Bourbon Basil doughnut is favorite of Blue Star customers. The blueberry flavor pops right out, while the basil and bourbon provide nice undertones.

TEX-ASS CHALLENGE


Voodoo makes a giant doughnut about the size of six standard doughnuts combined, and it's free for anyone who eats it in 80 seconds or less. Incidentally, Round Rock Donuts in Round Rock, Texas, also sells a "Texas-sized" doughnut -- but without the potential money-back offer.

MARSHALL MATHERS

Also from Voodoo Doughnut, the Marshall Mathers is a plain cake doughnut topped with vanilla frosting and mini M&M's. Don't get it? Marshall Mathers is the given name of rapper Eminem.

CEREAL DOUGHNUTS

Cereal is becoming a standard doughnut garnish, and Voodoo makes three types of cereal doughnuts. Yeast doughnuts are covered in glaze and topped with Fruit Loops, Captain Crunch, or Cocoa Puffs.

S'MORES DOUGHNUTS

Family-owned and -operated for more than 50 years, Holtman's Donuts in Cincinnati serves two varieties of s'mores doughnut. The first is a regular yeast doughnut dipped in chocolate icing and graham cracker crumbs, topped with a specially ordered square marshmallow, toasted with a butane torch, and finished with chocolate icing. For the second, a marshmallow is tucked into the yeast dough before frying, and the doughnut is topped with chocolate icing and graham cracker.

MAPLE BACON BLUEBERRY CAKE

Those looking for something decidedly different may want to bite into Holtman's maple bacon blueberry cake doughnut. A combination of two sweet ingredients with a salty, bacon kick, it's not a combination found in most doughnut shops. For something slightly more conventional, the shop has a chocolate maple bacon doughnut, too.

LEMON GINGER

Brooklyn-based Dough serves a variety of classic flavors as well as choices that change with the season. A mix of sweet, sour, and spice, the lemon-ginger doughnut has a ginger and lemon glaze as well as pieces of candied ginger on top.

CHAI CREAM

A rich, chai pastry filling mixes with a Valrhona chocolate glaze for this tea-inspired Dough doughnut. Toasted almonds provide a surprisingly elegant garnish. This flavor is part of the rotating menu, so order it when it pops up.

MATCHA-SUGAR

Dough's matcha doughnut definitely catches the eye with its bright green color, a shade that comes courtesy of matcha, a finely ground powder made from a specially grown green tea. This yeast doughnut rolled in a blend of matcha cane sugar and a pinch of salt would pair perfectly with a cuppa.

DOUGHKAS

Dough combines doughnuts and babka at its Flatiron location, using doughnut dough to make a fluffier version of a traditional babka (an Eastern European coffee cake). There are two flavors of "doughkas" currently available -- sticky banana and Mexican chocolate -- but more are on the way.

Fonuts in Los Angeles makes a chorizo cheddar doughnut that could be a little healthier than a traditional doughnut -- at least in one respect. Instead of deep frying, the shop steams or bakes all its creations.

Another savory offering from L.A.'s Fonuts, the rosemary olive oil flavor is an unexpected option. In online reviews, some say it's a bit oily, but many others say the olive oil adds moistness and the flavor is a delicious alternative to sweet options.

BIRTHDAY


Rather than choose cake or pie, Chicagoans can celebrate with a tiered birthday cake doughnut from Firecakes.
