Asus K200MA Review

This 11.6-inch laptop is basic, light, and portable yet manages to squeeze in a full-size keyboard. You're also not likely to find a cheaper model with a touchscreen.

It's hard to believe that a good, solid laptop can be found for less than $300, but the Asus K200MA (starting at $294, Amazon) is pretty impressive considering its ultra-budget price. In an Asus K200MA review for Laptop Mag, an expert cites the portability of this laptop, which has an 11.6-inch touchscreen and weighs just over 3 pounds. The display's color accuracy may be a little bit off, but the reviewer considers it pretty good and notes the deep, solid blacks. She observes that the touchscreen is quick and responsive, although unfortunately prone to glare. The keyboard feels a little mushy, but the touchpad is fast and registers swipes accurately.

Not surprisingly, the Asus K200MA isn't exactly the most powerful system on the block, with a low-voltage Intel Bay Trail-M dual-core Celeron CPU, but the Laptop Mag expert verifies that it's plenty fast enough for the usual tasks such as web surfing, working on office documents, streaming video, and so on. The three-cell battery lasted for about 5 hours and 23 minutes in the site's test, which is on the short side compared with other similar laptops. The Asus K200MA review concludes that this is a pretty good machine considering how cheap it is, and a good option for consumers looking for a basic, portable laptop.

Where to buy

Indeed, for the most part, buyers reviewing the laptop on Amazon really like the Asus K200MA. Several comment that the touchscreen works well and the system is easy to use. Users appreciate the laptop's small size, which is ideal for traveling. Users say the Asus K200MA runs smoothly and often mention how impressed they were with the low price. The most common complaint among consumers is that they either don't like or aren't very familiar with Windows 8, a reflection on the near-ubiquitous operating system rather than the laptop itself.

The Asus K200MA has 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. The 11.6-inch, high-definition touchscreen has a resolution of 1366 x 768, or 720p. The laptop includes a memory card reader that supports SC/SDHC and MMC cards. It also has a USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, and an HDMI port. This laptop supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connections and also has an Ethernet port. It's available in black, white, blue, or red.

The Asus K200MA isn't a perfect laptop and won't blow you away with its speed, but it's an excellent value. It costs about the same as a typical Chromebook but still uses Windows, which, despite some consumers' aversion to Windows 8, is still the operating system of choice for most new laptops. The Asus K200MA has a few weak spots, such as glare on the screen, just-fast-enough performance, and a soft keyboard, but those shortcomings are pretty easy to forgive once you check out the price tag.
