Summary:

Microtel is a relative newcomer in the budget lodging segment but Microtel reviews indicate it already outshines most of the competition by a long shot. In a 2013 J.D. Power and Associates guest satisfaction survey the chain received the highest rating for budget hotels. Reviews at Travelocity for a property in upstate New York, for example, most often checked value for money in the review template, followed by comfort of the beds, staff and service, and quality of the rooms; posts praise the complimentary breakfast (and nighttime cookies), cleanliness, quiet, and room rates. Here and at other review sites we noted that guests seem to be pleased by their low expectations for economy hotels being repeatedly met and exceeded by the franchise; many say they would definitely stay again at a Microtel.

Although some Microtel reviews express disappointment with the visit, we discerned no obvious pattern in guests' comments. Customer service is the one factor that seems to prompt occasional griping directed at some properties, including several reviews on Trip Advisor reporting blots such as overcharges, unwillingness to accommodate a lost wallet, and failure to respond to complaints about noise. That said, the vast majority of Microtel locations -- including the one noted above -- garner high marks overall.

The amenities offered by Microtel help boost its reputation. The hotel chain provides free Wi-Fi, free calling, free breakfast, and a loyalty program under the Wyndham Rewards umbrella where multiple stays at Microtels can build points toward a free room at one of its swankier cousins. Microtel also offers discounts for booking in advance.

Still a growing franchise with fewer locations (about 300, mostly in the eastern U.S.) than the major budget hotel operators, Microtel provides the kind of comfort and service that make a good deal even better.
