Chegg.com is primarily a textbook rental site, though it does let you buy discounted books as well as sell textbooks on the site for credit or cash. And you can ship books back at the end of the term for free, which is a huge bonus for the cash-strapped. Users report customer service representatives are helpful with questions or issues concerning their orders.

Chegg.com is the biggest player in the textbook rental industry, but it lets customers buy and sell cheap college textbooks, as well. Students and "experts" write mostly positive comments in Chegg.com reviews. According to a Chegg.com review by Campus Grotto, this site offers the cheapest prices on textbook rentals and is responsive to customers' problems and queries; the Chegg.com review also says books arrive in good condition. Some students posting Chegg.com reviews on Resellerrattings.com agree, noting the "like-new" appearance of the books and fast shipping, but others report problems with third-party shippers (books don't arrive on time), mistaken or excessive charges, and books with torn pages and lots of markings. A Chegg.com review on Factoidz.com likes Chegg's pledge to plant a tree for each book rented.

Customers are accountable for the condition of the books upon return, so if you're a habitual highlighter or note writer, renting is probably not a good choice. But if you're disciplined about not marking up books and you're on a tight budget, Chegg.com might make sense. Although you don't get any money back when you're done with the book -- as you do when you buy -- the upfront costs of renting are generally lower than buying.
