Home Depot is the hometown darling of Atlanta, Georgia and the largest hardware chain in the United States. Geared towards professional builders and contractors as well as the intermediate-to-expert do-it-yourselfer, Home Depot has built a reputation for having the most convenient store locations and superior project expertise, although we were not wowed during our shopping expeditions. The hardware store's weekend workshops and tool rental services are popular with customers and set Home Depot apart from the competition. Areas where Home Depot falters are customer service, perceived product quality, and overall store organization. Although such metrics vary by store, Lowe's consistently ranks higher than the orange giant in these categories. Despite the fact that Lowe's wins a higher rating overall with shoppers, there's no denying that Home Depot surpasses Lowe's in terms of growth and stock performance. Those who know their way around a tool box or have a professional interest in home improvement may find Home Depot better suited to their needs.
