If you’ve recently browsed aisles of throw pillows or oversized clocks, this might hit close to home.

The retail apocalypse just claimed another big-box victim. At Home filed for bankruptcy and announced it will be shuttering locations nationwide.

Here is the scoop.

Why Did At Home File for Bankruptcy?

On June 16, At Home Group Inc. — the Texas-based home décor chain known for its endless rows of artificial plants and quirky seasonal bins — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware.

In its statement, the company blamed soaring debt and punishing tariffs on Chinese imports, which once hit 145%, for slamming profit margins.

“Given the expenses associated with brick-and-mortar operation and the issues affecting the retail industry, a number of the (At Home) remaining stores are operating at sub-optimal performance levels,” read the court documents.

Where and When Are the Closures Happening?

At Home, which operates around 266 stores across 40 states, announced it will shut down 26 underperforming locations as part of its Chapter 11 restructuring plan. While no hard closing dates have been given, liquidation sales are expected to begin immediately and continue into the summer. Most affected stores will remain open for several weeks to offload inventory.
