Great news for bookworms across the country. Barnes & Noble just announced plans to open 60 more stores in 2026, building on the 60 new locations it already opened in 2025.
The book chain, which already operates 721 bookstores across all 50 states and U.S. territories, didn’t share specific details about the 2026 openings. But it did say the next wave of openings will continue through the upcoming year.
“Bookstores are enjoying a renaissance as people appreciate the pleasures of well stocked, beautiful stores where the service is informed and friendly,” said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful. In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019.”
Where Are the New Stores Opening?
According to a list obtained by USA TODAY, the bookseller plans to open stores in Ohio, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, California, Virginia, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. Barnes & Noble said the exact locations and opening dates are still being finalized, but several of the stores in these states are expected to debut in the first half of the year.
