Big Lots, a store known for bargains on everything from welcome mats to mouthwash, filed for bankruptcy last year. Since then, it’s felt like a rollercoaster as some stores close and some stores reopen, but the latest news is great for fans: Over a hundred Big Lots are reopening in May. Here’s the scoop, including every location that’s going to be up and running soon.
Why Are Some Big Lots Stores Reopening?

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in September 2024. It cited reasons including less demand for its furniture and decor, inflation, interest rates, and a slowdown in consumer spending after the pandemic era. At its peak, it ran 1,300 stores in 48 states.
Since then, a company called Variety Wholesalers, which also operates Bargain Town and Roses Discount, purchased hundreds of Big Lots locations. They’re the ones reopening Big Lots locations now, and in all they plan to operate 219 stores.
When Are the Stores Reopening?

Variety Wholesalers already reopened some Big Lots locations in April. Now, 132 locations will be reopening in May, according to a press release from the company. There will be two waves of openings: some will open on May 1, and the rest will open on May 15. The company has not said which stores will open on which date, however. But, all stores on the list should be open by mid-May.
