It’s the season of baking and pumpkin spice everything, and that means home cooks are using tons of cinnamon. But a large recall just hit ground cinnamon products due to elevated lead levels, according to a public health alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Here’s everything you need to know about the cinnamon recalls, including which brands are affected.

Ground cinnamon products subject to the health alert and recalls contain elevated levels of lead. The FDA warns that “exposure to these products may be unsafe.” Samples of the recalled products were collected by state testing programs and confirmed by the FDA through additional testing.

Short-term exposure to lead may not cause any symptoms, according to the FDA. But high levels of exposure may result in severe symptoms, especially in children. Acute lead poisoning can cause an array of symptoms, including abdominal pain, muscle weakness, weight loss, and vomiting.

There is a string of related cinnamon recalls that have been going on for over a year. The original public health alert for lead-contaminated cinnamon was made on July 30, 2024. Earlier this month, three new recalls were added to the existing ones, bringing the number of cinnamon product recalls to 16.

If you have any of the recalled ground cinnamon products, the FDA advises you to stop using them and throw them away immediately. Because spices have a long shelf life, check your pantry for the affected products. You may be able to contact the store where you purchased it for a refund.
