Costco is well known for having great deals on wine, but one of those bottles is being recalled for a pretty scary reason, according to a notice posted on the Costco website. If you usually buy your wine at the popular warehouse chain, it’s time to check your shelves and cellars and see if you have a bottle involved in the latest Costco wine recall.

There is a “risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use,” according to the Costco recall notice sent to members who have purchased the wine. To us, that sounds like spontaneous shattering or even explosion, which could send glass shards flying — not to mention make a huge mess. There’s no mention of how many reports of these bottles shattering the company has received.

If you have the recalled Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene, Costco is advising you not to open the bottle or return it to the store. Instead, wrap the unopened bottle in paper towels, put it in a plastic bag, and place it in a garbage can to avoid risk from shattered glass. You can still get a full refund from Costco without returning the product.
