National pharmacy chains aren’t doing so well right now. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy a second time and is closing of stores, and Walgreens has plans to close 1,200 locations. Now, CVS announced that it’s closing hundreds of stores this year, and some have already closed. Here’s what we know, including a list of closing locations.
Why Is CVS Closing Stores?
In 2021, CVS announced that it was going to close stores in order to “optimize” its existing locations and pharmacies. Since then, the company has closed about 900 stores, according to USA Today. National pharmacy chains have been struggling since the pandemic with labor costs, competing online pharmacies, and smaller reimbursements for prescriptions.
In February, CVS stated in an annual report that it would close 271 stores in 2025 as part of “enterprise-wide restructuring plan intended to streamline and simplify the organization.”
When Are the CVS Stores Closing?
CVS did not release an official list of locations that are closing or any specific dates, but dozens of locations have already closed or have announced their closure already this year. If your pharmacy is on the list of closures, it’s best to call the location to make sure it’s still in business, and find out when it will close.
