Dairy Queen vanilla soft serve

Today feels like an “almost” day. It’s Thursday, so it’s almost the weekend. It’s the 19th of March, so it’s almost spring. But one thing we weren’t sure of is that it’s almost time for free ice cream. And you have Dairy Queen to thank.

It’s Free Cone Day, the chain’s annual tradition of celebrating the changing of the season with a nationwide sugar rush. DQ is offering free vanilla soft-serve cones all day today as a celebration of the official start of spring, which is on March 20.

“Free Cone Day is all about celebrating the simple joys – warmer weather, a classic vanilla cone and the happiness that comes from sharing a smile,” Maria Hokanson, executive vice president of marketing at American Dairy Queen Corp., said in a news release. “There’s something truly special about seeing people light up over a free cone, and this year, we’re excited to give away more cones and create more happy moments for our fans than ever before.”

Since Dairy Queen started this sweet tradition in 2015, the chain has given away more than 38 million free cones nationwide. In 2025 alone, the sandwich and ice cream chain offered 5 million free cones, and it plans to beat its own record this year by giving away even more.

“Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that make us the happiest, and free vanilla soft-serve cones prove it. Free Cone Day brings smiles, sparks connection and gives people a reason to pause, celebrate and enjoy a small moment of happiness together,” it says in the release, and we’re inclined to agree.

What’s the Catch?

Well, there really isn’t one. That’s the weird (but great) part. Dairy Queen is just doing this for the love of ice cream. You just go to the drive-thru and they’ll know what to do. You are not required to make a purchase to get the free cone at locations outside of malls.

“Whether you’re a devoted soft-serve superfan who visits weekly or someone who enjoys an occasional treat, Free Cone Day is designed for all treat lovers,” reads DQ’s website. “There are no strings attached — just pure, frozen fun. It’s the perfect excuse to grab your bestie, surprise the kids or simply treat yourself.”

The promotion runs all day while supplies last, with a limit of one free cone per person; it’s not valid on delivery or mobile orders.
