Over 20,000 Dollar General Stores operate across the country, providing a place to get inexpensive housewares and groceries. But soon that number will shrink by nearly 150 locations, according to financial information released by the company. Here’s what we know about the downsizing.
Why Is Dollar General Closing Stores?

Late last year, Dollar General initiated a “store portfolio optimization review,” according to the financial report from the company, which also revealed that 2024 fourth quarter operating profit decreased 49.2%. The goal was “identifying stores for closure or re-bannering based on an evaluation of individual store performance, expected future performance, and operating conditions.”
In other words, this was a business decision.
How Many Stores Are Closing?

The company plans to close 96 Dollar General stores, as well as 45 Popshelf stores. Popshelf is another retail brand owned by Dollar General that started in 2020 and focuses on home goods, seasonal merchandise, and party supplies. There are about 220 Popshelf locations in 21 states currently.
Along with the closures, Dollar General plans to convert six Popshelf locations to Dollar General.
Which Locations Are Closing?

Unfortunately, Dollar General did not release any details about which locations will be closing yet. Presumably the company will announce that information soon, and we’ll update this article when it does.
When Are Dollar General Stores Closing?

Dollar General did not announce an exact date for any store closings, but said they will happen in the first fiscal quarter of this year. Since the company’s fiscal year starts in February, that means the stores will probably close by the end of April 2025.
Other Stores Closing

Dollar General is not the only store to close many locations recently. Joann, a sewing supply and craft store, filed for bankruptcy twice before announcing that it was closing all locations permanently. Party City also went out of business at the end of last year. Big Lots, Red Robin, Walgreens, and Advanced Auto Parts are just some of the other businesses that have announced closures recently.
