On Sept. 17, 2024, the FDA elevated the recall status of 11 of these 19 products to a Class 1 designation, which is the highest level of risk, meaning there is a “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection. While healthy individuals might experience mild symptoms like headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the situation can be much more severe for vulnerable populations.

Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk, as listeriosis can lead to serious complications, including miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women.
