There’s a new recall for something every day, it seems, but usually these recalls are for things like E. coli and Listeria.

But lately? We’ve got radioactive shrimp on the loose. While at first it seemed the reports of potential radioactive contamination were tied only to one brand, the frozen shrimp recall has since expanded significantly.

How Can Shrimp Be Radioactive?

A computer screen displays a colorful graph with energy peaks; a cursor points to a red peak labeled "Cs-137" with data on nuclide, energy (661.7 keV), and net area (84193.9).

Cesium-137, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, is a silvery-white metal that turns into a liquid at room temperature and can bond with chlorides or certain types of ions in shrimp bodies. After scanning shipping containers in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami, Border Patrol and Customs found traces of Cesium-137.

Where Was the Shrimp Originally Imported From?

BMS Foods, also known as PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati was the company behind the processing of this shrimp, currently operating out of Indonesia.
