Winter is dragging its feet, so it takes very little to qualify as a mood boost right now. A stack of free pancakes will do.
On Tuesday, March 3, IHOP is bringing back its annual National Pancake Day giveaway. From 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, participating U.S. locations will offer a free short stack of three original buttermilk pancakes to dine-in guests.
The sweetest part of this generous offer from IHOP is that there are zero strings attached. This isn’t a BOGO and there’s no minimum purchase. The only real goal is getting people through the doors, and the free stack sticks to plain buttermilk, no flavored upgrades.
While a lot of restaurants recognize National Pancake Day on September 26, IHOP does its own thing. The chain claims the first Tuesday in March as its official pancake holiday, and this year’s March 3 giveaway marks the 21st anniversary of the promotion.
It originally launched the promotion as a fundraising effort and is again encouraging guests to donate to Feeding America. For every $1 contributed at IHOP on March 3, the company says it will help provide at least 10 meals to local Feeding America partner food banks.

“As the leader in breakfast, pancakes are part of our DNA — so much so that they’re embedded in our name,” said Lenna Yamamichi, vice president Brand Creative, IHOP, in the announcement.
IHOP is also framing the giveaway as a reason to meet up with friends, not just stop in alone for a quick bite. The company said it’s using “intentionally DIY-looking” flyers to attract younger customers and position the day as an easy, no-pressure hang over a free short stack.
“This National Pancake Day, we want IHOP to feel like more than a restaurant,” said Yamamichi. “We’re getting creative and flipping the narrative, transforming IHOP into the go-to meetup spot to grab a free short stack, settle into a booth, and turn a simple meal into quality time. No planning, no pressure, because pancakes just taste better when the table’s full.”
