Another day, another store announces that it’s closing more locations. Earlier this week, Joann Fabrics announced that it’s closing a whopping 500 locations, but now it’s JCPenney’s turn. The nationwide department store just revealed that it’s closing even more locations this year. Here’s what we know, and the full list of closures.
Why Is JCPenney Closing More Stores?

JCPenney filed for bankruptcy back in 2020. Since then, about 240 of its stores have closed. Right now, there’s about 650 locations left in the U.S. (Is anyone else surprised that the number is that high?!) “The decision to close a store is never an easy one, but isolated closures do happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors,” the company said in a statement. That implies that these closures are routine, but it’s still never a good sign.
How Many Stores Is JCPenney Closing?

There are 8 stores on the chopping block. Each one is in a different state, so there are 8 states affected. The closures are not related to the recent merger of JCPenney with Aéropostale’s parent company to create Catalyst Brands, JCPenney confirms.
