Whether it was canceled flights caused by last summer’s staffing shortages or December’s winter storms that forced thousands of flight delays and cancellations, many airline passengers experienced travel chaos in 2022.
Among them was a bride who missed her destination wedding in Belize and a family unable to embark on their $23,000 Royal Caribbean cruise. Despite the disruptions, some airlines fared better than others, according to a review of on-time performance by aviation analytics company Cirium. At the top of the ratings is Brazilian carrier Azul Airlines, which had an on-time arrival rate of 88.9%.
These airlines’ on-time arrival rates trailed just behind Azul, rounding out the Top 5:
- All Nippon Airways: 88.6%.
- Japan Airlines: 88%.
- Latam Airlines: 86.3%.
- Delta Air Lines: 83.6%.

Among other domestic carriers, United Airlines ranked eighth with an on-time arrival rate of 80.5%, and American Airlines came in 10th with 78.3%. The outcome was bleaker for discount carrier Allegiant Air, which had an on-time rate of 65.9%.
The performance review also examined top-performing airports. In the U.S., Salt Lake City International Airport nabbed the top spot with 83.9% of its departures taking off on time.
